House Speaker Johnson offers prayers for the congressman’s loved ones.
U.S. Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr., of New Jersey, passed away on Wednesday after a heart attack two weeks before left him hospitalized in a coma. He had suffered from several health issues related to diabetes. He had served in his congressional seat since 2012, filling the position his father had previously held since 1989.
House Speaker Mike Johnson stated, “We are saddened to be informed of the passing today of Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr., who had been serving New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District since 2012, and who succeeded his father in the same position. Our prayers are offered today for his family and friends, and especially his wife, Bea, and their three children.“
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called Congressman Payne a “highly effective public servant and compassionate leader.“
